Abstract: Most oilfields in China have entered into their mature stage with a high or extra-high water cut after several decades of development. At this stage, the distribution of remaining oil in mature reservoirs is characterized by "highly scattered in the whole field and relatively abundant in some localities". The traditional reservoir description technologies cannot meet the requirement of prediction of the very complicated remaining oil distribution. Therefore, precisely predicting the distribution of scattered remaining oil, especially predicting the locations of these abundant areas, becomes the key to effectively revitalizing mature reservoirs and improving their secondary recovery. It is necessary to get a distinct understanding of the location of the abundant remaining oil by integration of geology, seismic, logging and sophisticated numerical simulation technologies to drill various efficient uneven wells including straight, sidetrack, horizontal and multi-lateral wells in the abundant area of remaining oil or to adopt other comprehensive recovery techniques. In this way, the remaining oil can be produced, and the secondary oil recovery can be improved.

Key words: high water cut oilfield, prediction of remaining oil, application of production seismics, sophisticated numerical simulation, improved secondary recovery
