The buried-hill oil fields in Bohai Sea have experienced a long period of exploration. From 1970s to 1990s, many boreholes were drilled referring to the exploration experiences of buried-oil reservoirs in onshore oil fields of eastern China, but few was successful in discovering large carbonate buried-hill oil and gas fields in Bohai Sea. Due to these failures, geologists reconsidered their strategies and finally recognized that Bohai Sea has unique geological characteristics of buried hill. For example, the bedrocks on the uplifts of Bohai oil province mainly consist of Archean, Proterozoic and Mesozoic granites, migmatitic granites, and less Lower Paleozoic carbonates. However, the Proterozoic algal dolomite best favorable to the formation of large buried-hill oil and gas fields is not developed in Bohai Sea. There are a large number of faults in Bohai oil province with intensive activities in the late period. According to conventional experience, the buried-hill reservoir and preservation conditions are poor in Bohai Sea, which is not beneficial for the formation of large buried-hill oil and gas fields. Through long-term practices and deep analyses, the coupling between granites, migmatitic granites and intensive bedrock faults is also found to be available for the formation of favorable buried-hill reservoirs with low core recovery rate and high test production. Geophysical data can be used for accurately predicting bedrock lithology and faults. The monadnock buried hills on the low uplifts adjacent to hydrocarbon-rich depressions are covered by shallow to semi-deep lacustrine shale, favorable for the formation of buried-hill oil and gas reservoirs. Under the guidance of innovative understandings for the exploration of buried-hills in Bohai Sea, two largest granite buried-hill oil and gas fields with 100 million tons of reserves were discovered in China, and its recognition-practice process is of great reference significance to other exploration areas.
