Abstract: Profile control treatment is a key measurement to control water in production well and improve waterflooding performance by reducing fluid channeling through higher-permeability thief zones. It plays an important role in waterflooding oil-field.The effect of such treatment often depends on placing the gel preferentially in the thief interval.Based on a lot of core experiments, this paper analyzes some factors which influence the selectivity of gellant when gellant can or cannot form face plugging. If gellants can form face plugging in low permeability zones, the influence of permeability ratio, gelation time, the absolute permeability of non-target zone on the selectivity is discussed. If gelant cannot form face plugging in low permeability zone, the influence of mobility ratio of oil and water, permeability ratio, resistence factor and initial pressure gradient of low permeability zones on the selectivity is discussed by sand-packed glass model tests and numerical analysis methods. Finally, based on core experiments, several methods such as controling injection pressure, forming face plugging and temporary plugging agents injection are tested to determine whether they can be exploited to optimize gel placement.
