Abstract: The "second subsidence belt" in eastern China is probably a large continental rift system formed on the eastern Chinese continent since late Mesozoic. It follows a north,north-easterly trend, over 4000km.leng and about 250~450km.wide,comparable with the recent eastern African rift-system,the occurence of this system might have been due to the subduction of the Pacific-Eurasian plate and collision of Indo-Australian plate with the Eurasian plate. The oil-gas reseevoir traps within the rift basins are predominantly of thestructural and stratigraphic type. The structural traps in Tertiary are chiefly in the tilted fault-blocks,rolling anticlines and anticlinal drape structures. The stragraphic traps from precam brian to Mesozoic are chiefty a variety of burial fault-blocks and volcanic rocks.Considering that there are many major oil and gas fields in the rift basins in the world,it would be possible to find more oil-gas reserves in the rift basins in eastern China.
