Abstract: The Chaidamo basin is noted for its arid climate, poor vegetation and active and frequent tectonic movements. From analyses of tones, patterns and blind textures of its Landsat images, the western part of the basin is divided into five geomorphological units: 1)the Lenghu area, 2) the northern part, 3) the Kantsakou-Huangshih area; 4) the Gashi area;and 5)the Shanhu area, with a total of 84 surface structures and possibly 15 circular features related to the structures. It is believed that the interpretations made of the images in this part of the basin are mostly valid. The sucess with which such interpretations are made depends largely on surface conditions and physical background of the underlying structures.
