Abstract: The basin at the mouth of Pearl River is a large sedimentary basin primarily of Tertiary origin, having undergone three stages of evolution: from late Cretaceous to early Oligocene, from middle Oligocene to early Miocene and from middle Miocene to Quarternary. The basic structural patterns formed in the basin include three types of depression and two types of uplift, either of fluviolacustrine, or of semi-closed sea, or of open sea deposition. They have plentiful oil source, good reservoir properties and excellent capping and trapping conditions very well associated. All this suggests that the basin at the mouth of Pearl River is provided with the basic structural conditions to form a large oil and gas basin with great potentialities.
