Abstract: Continental plant remains as source materials for petroleum is the main topic of discussion. Taking fatty acid as an example, the thermodynamic process of formation of coal and petroleum, as well as the evolution and thermal decomposition of such organic material as carbon, hydrogen etc. in the sediments are examined. Indicators of continental life found in petroleum are dealt with in the last part.
