Abstract: Trace vanadium and nickel in crude oil and the ratio of V/Ni are used for identificaticn of crude oil of continental and marine origin. Based on data from 17 oil fields in China, it has been concluded that generally speaking oil with V/Ni<1 is of continental origin and that with V/Ni1 is of marine origin. The form of occurrence of vanadium and nickel in crude oil and their possible sources are discussed with reference to data available from home and foreign sources.
