Abstract: Hexi area is the intersection position of several major plates in China. Multiphase tectonic movement made structural feature very complex and formed numerous types of basin in the area.Since Paleozoic era,th plate movemeent resulted in the formation of five types of different sedimentary bases and even the formation of five types of different basin.The different types of basins have quite different structural features, sedimentary evolution and different oil/gas exploration prospect.During Permo-Carboniferous period,in the east of Hexi Area,such as Bayan Haote,Wuwei and Dingxi Basins,a set of very thick sediments from marine to transitional facies were deposited, th source rockseare very thick and have good oil/gas exploration prospect.During three Jurassic zones of subsidence were formed and a number of small oil/gas reservoirs have been found with the Jurassic in the area.It indicated that the Jurassic system is a very important strata system for exploration.Cretaceous system has the highest degree of exploration,the richest oil/gas resources and the largest reserves.Cretaceous system has great potentialities for oil/gas exploration,if further and detailed survey could be made.(1)Cenozoic is dominated by anticlinal oil/gas pools;(2)Mesozoic is dominated by invisible oil/gas pools;(3)Paleozoic by block and buried hill oil/gas pools.
