Abstract:

Based on a study of the Ordovician in the Ordos Basin, such as sedimentary characteristics, conditions of source rocks, types of reservoirs and major controlling factors of hydrocarbon accumulations and traps, we could identify four provinces in Ordovician carbonates, i.e. gas reservoirs in the weathering crust of the middle and eastern basin, dolostones distributed around the Caledonian paleo-uplift, platform margin belts and the pre-salt of the eastern basin. Integrated with new advances in the gas exploration of this basin, gas reservoirs in the weathering crust were selected as preferred targets for the next gas exploration. Meanwhile, various effective reservoirs developed in dolostones circumjacent to the paleo-uplift, platform margin belts and the Ordovician pre-salt in the eastern basin were thought a great potential to serve as successive domains for the future gas exploration. This study is of great importance in guiding gas exploration in Ordovician marine carbonates of the Ordos Basin.
