Strategic status and role of deep underground space development and utilization in advancing new energy

深部地下空间开发利用在新能源发展中的地位与作用

Abstract: Against the backdrop of global climate change, the green energy transition, and carbon neutrality goals, this study analyzes the critical supporting role of deep underground space in advancing the energy revolution, accelerating the building of an energy powerhouse nation, and promoting high-quality energy development. Through literature review, case studies, and comparative research, the concept of deep underground space within the energy system is defined and its connotation examined. The paper reviews the role shift of deep underground space from single to diverse in human energy history from the firewood era, coal era, and oil-gas era to the new-energy era. It further explores the functions and potential of deep underground space in new energy development and analyzes the strategic position and supporting role of deep underground space. Based on an investigation of global technological pathways, strategic orientations, and associated challenges and opportunities, the deep underground space development and utilization in advancing new energy is classified into four categories, i.e., underground clean energy development, underground energy storage, underground sequestration of CO2 and waste, and subsurface refining, with corresponding technologies discussed. Under the carbon neutrality agenda, deep underground space, by virtue of its large scale, long cycle, and low environmental impact, will play a strategic role in large-scale new energy development and storage. Looking ahead, China should strengthen resource surveys, improve regulatory frameworks, and increase research and development investment to promote the sustainable utilization of deep underground space, thereby supporting energy structure optimization and the realization of carbon neutrality goals.

摘要: 在全球气候变化、能源绿色转型与碳中和目标的背景下,分析了深部地下空间在新能源发展过程中深入推进能源革命、加快能源强国建设、推动能源高质量发展的重要支撑作用。通过文献综述、案例分析和比较研究,对能源体系中的深部地下空间作出定义并分析其内涵,回顾了深部地下空间在人类能源史中的薪柴时代、煤炭时代、油气时代以及新能源时代从单一向多元的角色演变,探讨了深部地下空间在新能源发展中的功能与潜力,分析了深部地下空间在新能源发展中的战略地位和支撑作用。通过调研全球深部地下空间利用的技术路线、战略方向以及面临的挑战和机遇,将新能源发展中的深部地下空间开发利用分为地下清洁能源开发、地下储能、CO2及废弃物的地下封存以及地下炼厂4大类,并探讨了相应的开发利用技术。在碳中和目标下,深部地下空间凭借其规模大、周期长和环境影响低的优势,将在新能源大规模开发与储存中发挥战略性作用。未来,中国应加强资源调查,优化管理制度,加大研发投入,推动深部地下空间的可持续开发,支撑能源结构优化与碳中和目标的实现。
